CP’s COVID-19 pandemic response

CP has worked diligently to prioritize the health and safety of our employees and the communities in which we operate during the COVID-19 pandemic. We recognize that the railway is critical to communities, customers, supply chains and the economy, so we took steps to provide uninterrupted service and operations at the onset of the global pandemic. Given the economic challenges across North America and around the world, we believe that our work as railroaders is more important now than ever.

After the COVID-19 pandemic emerged in early 2020, we established the Pandemic Response Team, responsible for developing a comprehensive pandemic planning framework and corresponding contingency action plans. Led by our chief risk officer, this cross-functional team has a direct line of communication to the CEO and senior executives.

CP also developed policies and procedures to direct and support the safety of our team members. For example, we implemented physical distancing protocols, enhanced sanitization measures, travel restrictions and face covering requirements. Our procurement and facilities teams ensured sanitizers and personal protective equipment were readily available. As some CP employees were unable to work from home due to the nature of their roles in the field, CP developed a set of guidelines called CP 7 to inform our employees and their families on how to stay safe at work and at home.

We established an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) to support employees and produced a 24/7 access channel where they could obtain current and accurate COVID-19 information, share concerns and report potential virus exposure or illness. The EOC tracks vital data and monitors business impacts as it relates to confirmed positive cases, affected employees and locations, and employee call and email volume. We are continuing to monitor the pandemic situation to be sure that we take appropriate actions to support the health of our employees and maintain business continuity.
